About Paver Calculator

Free calculators and plain-English guides for working out paver projects before you order: patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls and flagstone.

What this site is

Paver Calculator is a set of free calculators for the quantities in a paver project: how many pavers, how much base and bedding sand, how many bags of polymeric sand, how much edge restraint, and how many retaining wall blocks. Each calculator prints its result as an order slip you can copy and take to your supplier.

How the numbers are worked out

Every page shows its formula and at least one worked example, so you can check the arithmetic yourself. The calculators use:

  • Nominal paver sizes (which already allow for a normal joint) and pattern allowances of about 5 to 15 percent for cuts.
  • Typical weights: crushed paver base at about 1.5 tons per loose cubic yard, dry bedding sand at about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, solid concrete pavers at about 140 lb per cubic foot, and polymeric sand at about 100 lb per cubic foot in the joint.
  • A 20 percent allowance for compacting the base and 10 percent extra for screeding sand.

These are typical figures, not the figures for your product. Paver dimensions, stone weights and bag coverage vary by manufacturer, quarry and moisture. Where your supplier, your paver’s spec sheet or your sand bag gives a figure, use it.

What this site isn’t

The guides explain common practice for paver work, but they aren’t an engineering design or a substitute for a manufacturer’s installation instructions, local building rules or advice from someone who has seen your site. That matters most for driveways, retaining walls and anything near a foundation.

The site doesn’t publish prices or cost averages. Prices for pavers, stone and labor vary widely between regions and over time, so the cost calculators work from prices you enter.
